So
is Sunridge a "sustainable" development?
No.
Although we've prohibited certain harmful practices and we do
encourage and support more responsible livestyle choices, there
is no such thing as "sustainable" green-field development.
Conversion of natural ground to urban land is an irreversible
process and a loss of an irreplaceable resource. We acknowledge
that we, along with our home builders and buyers, are participating
in an activity that cannot be sustained, and probably should not
be occuring. At the same time, we recognize that the main forces
driving urban development are population growth, immigration and
internal migration, and extended life expectancies. Stopping the
construction of new housing for our expanding population, as suggested
by some anti-growth groups, seems to us an inhumane and ineffective
solution to the problem of unsustainability. Real solutions will
have to address the root causes of overpopulation.
